![]() This week, Emily King reported that the female laid a third clutch on the night of 14 July, with 67 eggs. 22, a soft shell turtle was trapped and caught in Hanoi for study. Half were removed and split between the three incubators, all in a sand media. They are also likely to be infertile, but this has yet to be determined. Then, in October 2020, a female turtle was captured in Vietnam and confirmed by veterinarians to be a female Rafetus swinhoei. To date clutches of 56, 65 and 67 eggs have been laid for a total of 188. This imperiled turtle species may now have a second chance at survival. The Yangtze giant softshell turtle (Rafetus swinhoei) is a large, beautiful, charismatic freshwater Asian turtle. These turtles were identified as Swinhoe’s softshell turtle (Rafetus swinhoei), or Hoan Kiem turtle. The confirmation of Swinhoe’s softshell turtle in Hanoi’s Dong Mo lake means there is now a female in addition to a male, who is at the Suzhou Zoo in China. Sadly, it is also the most endangered turtle species with only three left in the world. Then, in October 2020, a female turtle was captured in Viet Nam and confirmed by veterinarians to be a female Rafetus swinhoei. One is wild living in a reservoir in Vietnam and the other two are a breeding pair at the Suzhou Zoo in China, both believed to be more than 100 years old. Ultimately, conservationists aim to help at least one male and female to breed to ensure that this species can return from the brink of extinction. The race to save this flagship species in Hanoi highlights the importance of working in partnership to mobilise resources and address issues like water pollution, safer habitat and more sustainable resource management. It also helps to replicate that success to save other species. ![]()
